KB Patio founder Kathryn Benavides talks with Redfin about how to upgrade from a screened-in porch to an upscale lanai lifestyle.
A Brief History of the Lanai
The modern concept of the lanai was an evolution of native Hawaiian design that was adopted by architects in the Hawaiian Islands in the 1920’s and 30’s. The lanai concept elegantly bridged the divide between indoor and outdoor living.
The lanai concept spread to the mainland United States, particularly Florida, during the 20th century. Florida’s climate and outdoor-centric lifestyle made it an ideal setting for lanais. The gateway nature of lanai spaces became popular for their ability to provide ventilation, passive cooling, and a less interrupted view of the landscape or garden. Over time, lanais in Florida evolved to include modern amenities like outdoor kitchens, bars, sophisticated dining and seating areas, and pool lighting.
While including a lanai in house plans for mild climates like Florida, Georgia, California, South Carolina, Louisiana and Texas may seem like a no-brainer, the trend is moving to the middle states and northeast as well. Screened-in porches were your grandma’s domain. Lanais go several steps further.
Lanais are Integral to the South Florida Lifestyle
“Lanais are now a staple in residential architecture,” says KB Patio founder Kathryn Benavides. “KB Patio & Home Decor stores carry a plethora of luxe weather-friendly furnishings, lighting and indoor/outdoor home decor that are a lanai decorator’s dream. Some of the poshest homes in the USA are in Naples and Fort Lauderdale, where the lanai is considered an important “room.” Many homes have more than one,” says Benavides.
