Kansas-born Vietnam veteran pilot Alan Palecek returned to civilian life in the USA with an appreciation for the hand-woven baskets he encountered in Southeast Asia, and a dream. He intuited that American designers and decorators would incorporate what seemed to him a sorely-missing design element.

From their San Francisco headquarters debut in 1974, to their evolution as a furnishings and décor company, culminating in their induction into the Home Furnishings Hall of Fame in 2020, the family-run Palecek, now with award-winning designer and heir Andrew at the helm, has stayed true to their vision. They strive to bring nature indoors, use natural materials and preserve centuries-old artisanal craftsmanship and techniques.
